Brandon Spike Suspends Self

THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP TO A PREVIOUS BLOG ENTRY:

University of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes has decided to suspend himself for the entire game against Vanderbilt this weekend. Spikes, who was caught on tape trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia Bulldog running back Washaun Ealey last Saturday has cited, "that he does not want to be a distraction to his team". Spikes again apologized for the incident and is showing remorse.

Gator head coach Urban Meyer had suspended Spikes for a half game against Vandy after reviewing the tape of the play. The incident raised the ire of the national media and called into question Meyer's suspension of a half game for Spikes.

In further news related to the Florida / Georgia game, SEC offices are reviewing the tape of a late hit against Tim Tebow during the contest. Meyer has sent a copy of the tape to Charles Bloom, coordinator of officials for the SEC.

SEC officials have come under fire in the last few weeks for missed calls or excessive calls and one officiating crew was suspended for calls during the LSU/Georgia game.

  1. At least he's manned up and admitted he did something wrong. One game against Vandy is not enough though.

  2. I feel the same way about Spikes suspension. I am very happy that Spike stepped up and made the decision to sit out the whole game. It's not like he would have been needed anyway. I still feel that one game is not enough. I thought a season suspension would have been more in line but would have agreed with a two game suspension. There is no place for that in the game. I don't care how dirty the game was getting. I would assume that the dirty play was going both ways though.

  3. I just hope everyone can put this behind us now and get on with the task at hand of winning the SEC and than a national title.

  4. comment sent to my e-mail:

"I think it shows a little about Spikes character, even if he is already labeld a thug! When he suspended himself he did something that 95% of the college kids would not have done. But then again he is a college kid, and wasn't about to give himself anymore than that. I was more surprised that SEC or the NCAA let it get to that point. I would have expected one of them would have extended the suspenssion to atleast both of the remaining conference games.
Spikes has made the best of a no win situation, and I'm just glad he made the decision."
