The rumors are starting to fly out of South Bend, IN and the Notre Dame football team concerning head coach Charlie Weis. It seems that this season will be Charlies last as the Irish head coach and the search has started for a replacement.
The list is long and I will pass it along just as it was passed along to me. Now I will say these are just all rumors and nothing has been confirmed. Remember though, Notre Dame has deep pockets and will be willing to hand out some serious cash for what is considered one of the most prestigious coaching positions in college football.
Here is the wish list in no particular order ( some names have been rumored before)
1) Chris Peterson - Boise State
2) Jim Grobe - Wake Forest
3) Brian Kelly - Cincinnati
4) Charlie Strong - Defensive Coordinator - Florida
5) Skip Holtz - East Carolina
6) Urban Meyer - Florida
7) Kirk Ferentz - Iowa
8) John Gruden - ESPN / Former head coach Tampa Bay Bucs
9) Bill Cowher - NBC / Former head coach Pittsburgh Steelers
10) Mike Shanahan - Former head coach Denver Broncos
11) Steve Spurrier - South Carolina
12) Bob Stoops - Oklahoma
13) Mike Stoops - Arizona
14) Tommy Tuberville - Former Auburn head coach
15) Gary Patterson - TCU
16) Steve Sarkasian - Washington
17) Greg Schiano - Rutgers
18) Bud Foster - Defensive Coordinator Virginia Tech
19) Tyrone Nix - Defensive Coordinator South Carolina
20) Troy Calhoun - Air Force
* - This is a corrected list. First list had Steve Spurrier on twice.
Not my list just one that was passed along.
**********UPDATE***************UPDATE***************UPDATE******************
There has to be some truth to the rumors. Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops has now come out and said that no one has contacted him from Notre Dame concerning the head coaching position. He added that there is not a coaching position available at this time at Notre Dame. With Oklahoma losing some key players next year and a few underclassman who may decide to leave after seeing Sooner quarterback Sam Bradford go down with a season ending injury this season, the Sooners may be in for a long season next year. And so it begins.

ReplyDeleteWow! Steve Spurrier is on the list Twice!!!!
Notre Dame will act fast on this one. They blew it when they missed out on Urban Meyer. Their Pride and Big Headed Attitude got in the way, thinking that there was no way Meyer would chose Florida over The Mighty Irish. Think Again!
All of these rumors will be very disruptive for schools like Cinncinati trying to have a once in a lifetime season, but wondering everyday if their coach and players will be focused on the task at hand and not about whether or not their coach is leaving for Notre Dame. Too many coaches previously, have waffled in their commitment to the program they are currently employed by, before announcing they are leaving for a better job. Notre Dame will have a new coach in place before the bowl season starts!!!!
My apologies for listing Spurrier twice. He was only on the list once.
ReplyDeleteI think there are some good names on the list and a few Notre Dame couldn't go wrong with. Peterson from Boise State would be my first choice. I would say Meyer from FLA. but I don't think he is going anywhere. I Ty Nix from South Carolina is interesting to be on this list. I don't think Notre Dame will take a coordinator though. They will want a "name" that has won before.
ReplyDeleteA few on the list I think you can cross off real quick, Foster, Strong, Nix, Tuberville, Gruden, and Shanhan. Long shots, in my mind, Spurrier, Meyer, Cowher, Bob Stoops, Sarkasian and Schiano.
ReplyDeletePeterson, Holtz, Grobe, Kelly and Calhoun would be the top five right now. It's too early though, they haven't even fired the Weis yet.
After reading the list I would have to think that the top five are really the top five on any of the admins wish list. That is a strong top five. They all have been winners and seem to be well disciplined teams.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't count out Urban Meyer at all until they announce the new coach. As you said the Irish have real deep pockets and will pay big money. With the Gators losing Tebow after this year I feel Meyer may entertain the idea a little bit more. Especially if the Gators win the National Championship again. Meyer could almost name his price and Notre Dame would pay it.
This whole process will be intersting if Charlie the Tuna gets the axe.
Do you think NBC will have any input on a new coach?
ReplyDeleteUrban Meyer as the Irish head coach. I would love that. Would be better than anything else we have had in a long time. Weis has worn out his welcome. We should have been playing for a BCS Bowl instead of trying to make it into the RJ's Tire and Quick Lube Bowl in BFE, Idaho..lol
ReplyDeleteThe former pro coaches you can take right off the list. Notre Dame has tried that and that's who they'll be firing. Peterson would be the obvious first choice. But not unheard of for the Notre Dame to grab a a SEC coach. Remember that guy named Low Holtz that won Notre Dame their last title. Spurrier would be on the short list as well.
