The polls are out and they are split, Florida is #1 in USA/ESPN poll and Alabama is #1 in the Associated Press poll. The BCS rankings are out and and Florida is one and Alabama is two.
So what did we learn from this weekend?
We learned that Florida got all they could handle from Arkansas. A final second field goal by Caleb Sturgis sealed the deal for the Gators. The Gator Nation though was on edge all game as the Razorbacks put up a fight more than was expected. After Arkansas missed their field goal toward the end of the game and left the Gators around two minutes to come up the field was their any doubt that Tim Tebow would not get the Gators in field goal range. Every game is not easy but the Gator are being exposed a little on offense, Tennessee, LSU and now Arkansas proved that the Gators are very beatable.
While Alabama dispatched South Carolina is was not without a fight either. The Crimson Tide again proved that if they win the National Championship they will do it by riding their defense. The offense is very serviceable and sophomore running back Mark Ingram is now getting whispers of some Heisman Trophy recognition after his big game against the Gamecocks.
Texas handed the Oklahoma Sooners their third loss of the season and stayed undefeated. More importantly though, the Sooners have lost Sam Bradford possibly for the season. A lot of questions came up when Tim Tebow when out with his head injury and whether or not he came back to early. No one questioned the Bradford injury but after reaggrevating the shoulder against the Longhorns maybe Bradford was the one that came back to soon.
The University of Southern California escaped a land mine in South Bend, IN by a nose against Notre Dame. A goal line stop ended the Irish dreams of getting into the BCS mix. The Irish though proved that they are on the mend and can hang with the big dogs of major college football.
The Purdue Boilermakers shocked Ohio State. With the loss the Buckeyes are now on the outside looking in for a BCS bowl bid. In other the Big Ten football the Iowa Hawkeyes keep plugging along, picking up a win over Wisconisn this weekend. The Hawkeyes are now undefeated, but ranked #11 and will find it very difficult to leap frog the teams in front of them. Kirk Ferentz has done a masterful job coaching the Hawkeyes this season but an undefeated season may be all they have to show for it. They are going to get no chance to play for National Championship or even be considered, even if they run the table.
So what have we learned, the battle for the National Championship is muddled and proving once again that a playoff system is needed in major college football. Too many good teams are going to be left out of the loop when the BCS Bowls are announced. We also learned that the Heisman Trophy picture is also as muddled as ever as well. Right now no player has had that marquee game to separate himself from the field.
One thing we all know is that if we are going to preach that parity if good for the game of college football then we need to let the teams settle it on the field and not in the polls and not by a computer. Who is the best team in the country, many of them have an argument but only two will get to prove it on the field.

Think of Boise State. I know their schedule isn't the toughest but not their fault because of the conference they are in. They will never get a shot.
ReplyDeleteYou made six picks last weekend and only got two right. Will give though the benefit of the doubt as two of the games were really close and could have gone either way. One was an upset that I don't think many would have picked. But what up with taking Wisconsin over Iowa.
ReplyDeleteBCS should be shortened to just BS because that is all it is. D one college football needs a playoff system just like every other division has. It is such a joke.
ReplyDeletecollege football does need playoffs. won't ever happen though because of the fat cats controlling the bowl games.
ReplyDeletecheck this out on espn.I think you are right about a college football playoff.

seems I read this same topic on your blog last month and agree with you. just read the espn story and they don't need a pac. they jusy need to hire you. below is what you wrote in sepetember:
ReplyDeleteTime is Right for as College Playoff System
The time is right for a college playoff system. This is an argument that takes place every year but there is always little or no progress that is made. If one were to look at the rankings right now almost every college football fan could predict who is going to be playing where in January with some certainty. That is what is wrong with system. If a play-off system were ever enacted it would almost bring an end to the college bowl system. As ESPN's Lee Corso would say, "Not so fast my friend." Let me lay it out for you.
I know everyone clamors that a plus one would work too but that opens up the door for some more arguing.
The National Championship game would float between the major bowl games as it does now. Meaning the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta would have a stake in this thing every year. But four bowl games is not enough. A fifth , sixth and seventh bowl would be needed. Let's say the Cotton Bowl is added along with the Holiday Bowl and Peach Bowl.
Here we go. Eight teams get in. Every team would have to be a member of a conference. Yes, that means almighty Notre Dame would have to join a conference.
These are the conferences that would be eligible to participate in the play-0ff system:
Big 10 Champion
SEC Champion
Big 12 Champion
ACC Champion
Pac-10 Champion
Big East Champion
Mountain West Champion
Conference USA Champion
Ranking would be used to seat the teams for the play-offs after they secure their perspective conference championship.
Below is an example of how it would unfold. I have just thrown teams in, so no arguing of why I didn't choose your team. These are the example teams that made it to the final eight with there made up ranking beside the team.
SEC CHAMPION: FLORIDA (#1)
BIG TEN CHAMPION: MICHIGAN (#2)
BIG 12 CHAMPION: TEXAS (#4)
PAC 10 CHAMPION: USC (#5)
MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPION: BYU (#7)
ACC CHAMPION: VA. TECH (#11)
BIG EAST CHAMPION: RUTGERS (#19)
CONFERENCE USA CHAMPION: LOUISVILLE (NR)
ROUND #1
2ND WEEK IN JANUARY:
WEDNESDAY NIGHT - HOLIDAY BOWL - USC (#5) VS BYU (#7)
THURSDAY NIGHT - COTTON BOWL - TEXAS (#4) VS VA. TECH (#11)
FRIDAY NIGHT - SUGAR BOWL - MICHIGAN (#2) VS. RUTGERS (#19)
SATURDAY NIGHT - PEACH BOWL - FLORIDA (#1) VS LOUISVILLE (NR)
RESULTS: USC BEATS BYU - VA TECH BEATS TEXAS - MICHIGAN BEATS RUTGERS - AND BY SOME STRANGE TWIST IF FATE LOUISVILLE UPSETS FLORIDA....GO AHEAD BEAT ME UP FLORIDA FANS...
ROUND TWO:
THIRD WEEK IN JANUARY
FRIDAY NIGHT: FIESTA BOWL - USC (#5) VS. VA. TECH (#11)
SATURDAY NIGHT: ORANGE BOWL - MICHIGAN (#2) VS LOUISVILLE (NR)
RESULTS: VA. TECH BEATS USC AND LOUISVILLE CONTINUES ITS CINDERELLA RUN
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. TO BE PLAYED ONE WEEK BEFORE SUPER BOWL.
SUNDAY NIGHT : ROSE BOWL - VA TECH VS. LOUISVILLE
The other bowl games could still be played because they really don't mean much anyway as long as the BCS is in place anyway. Everyone comes out a winner in this scenario. I know the complaints will come out about this that the season is too long and too much travel but let's keep the season to 10 games with conference championship games and it almost works out about the same.
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.
You have spelled it out for them. Let's take a vote and move to this for next year. May the best team win.
